Torteval’s name originates from the old French term “Torte Vaux,” which means twisted or crooked valleys. This perfectly describes the charming landscape of the parish. Over time, Torteval transformed from scattered farms and dwellings into the thriving community it is today.
During my exploration of Torteval, I was fascinated by the historical landmarks that provide a glimpse into its past. One of the most iconic sites is the medieval St. Philippe de Torteval Church. Its stunning architecture and ancient wall paintings offer a captivating link to the island’s religious heritage. Torteval also played a role during World War II, and the German Underground Hospital located within the parish serves as a haunting reminder of those troubled times. I had the opportunity to explore the underground tunnels, gaining insight into the island’s wartime experiences.

For history enthusiasts like me, a visit to The National Trust of Guernsey Folk & Costume Museum was a must. To experience the vibrant local culture, I ventured into Torteval’s charming countryside and participated in the popular West Show. This lively event celebrates Guernsey’s agricultural traditions and provided me with a unique opportunity to witness traditional dances, admire local produce, and immerse myself in the warm and friendly atmosphere.
