Christmas in Guernsey- How to Maximise Your Christmas Staycation
This may not sound the best for Christmas (let’s admit it, Christmas by the beach isn’t the most typical). While a staycation may not sound glamorous, a Christmas staycation in Guernsey can be an amazing experience 😉

During winter, Guernsey might as well be the set of a Christmas movie. The island gets cozy, with charming villages and historic sites wrapped in a cozy mist.

Even the coastal beauty takes on a serene quality, with dramatic cliffs looking over the sea. So, grab your hot cocoa and your cozy socks, you’re about to see how you can enjoy an unforgettable staycation in Guernsey!

Enjoy the Decorations (Fit for Santa)

During winter, Guernsey at night is always dressed up, waiting for that unexpected visit from St. Nick. If you want to meet Santa himself, head to Sark on December16th to see him turn on the famous Christmas lights. Wandering beneath the twinkling lights will spark Christmas joy into even the crankiest Scrooge in your family.

If you want to take the fun home with you for your Christmas staycation, get into the mood and decorate your own home!

A few lights, ornaments, and garlands can go an incredibly long way!

Whether you want to be part of the decorations or just wander and enjoy, make sure you don’t miss out on the amazing Christmas lights. This is an amazing compliment to your Guernsey Christmas staycation!

Visit the Guernsey Christmas Markets

The Islands of Guernsey host several traditional Christmas markets that are worth a visit. Plan some time during your staycation to wander into town for the markets, some of which open as early as late November!

These Christmas markets will have you feeling like you wandered into a Hallmark movie. With dozens of booths, everything from festive food and drink to artisan crafts and handmade gifts are available. Cozy up to your favorite people, enjoy a good wander, and some shopping, if you so choose!

Chow Down on Local Cuisine

Your waistline knows that Christmas is the time for delicious cooking and enjoying decadent meals with family and friends!

Embrace it during your Christmas staycation, by preparing traditional Guernsey dishes at home. Consider whipping up Guernsey Gâche (a fruit loaf), seafood chowder, or potato pie using only-the-best local ingredients. Fill your home with family, friends, and food to chow down this holiday! (And remember: if you cooked, someone else should be cleaning!)

If you don’t feel like cooking at home, don’t worry – you can take your staycation to a local restaurant and enjoy the same flavors there. Many restaurants change their menus to embrace the season, with full roasted turkeys and seasonal hot soups to fit everyone’s needs.

Skate Your Troubles Away

Yes! Embrace the chilly weather, strap on some ice skates, and visit the Guernsey ice skating rink!

The rink promises not only fun ice skating, but also high Christmas vibes at Le Friquet Garden Centre. The whole place is decked out for Christmas, including a Christmas tree in the middle of the rink you can skate around!

Once you’re done with your skating, grab a cup of hot chocolate and some warm snacks.

Hot tip: if you’ve got little ones, make sure you reserve them a skate aid in advance, so they don’t end up flopping around like a baby penguin 😉
