Where Every Step Tells A Story- The Rosaire Steps in Herm

Tucked away on the quaint island of Herm, lie the breathtaking Rosaire Steps. These unique granite steps, estimated to be around 400 million years old, are a marvel of erosion.

Over time, the relentless pounding of the sea against the island’s cliffs has carved out a stunning staircase of rock, with each “step” resembling a gentle curve.

The steps themselves are said to date back to the 18th century, constructed by monks who used them as a means to reach the sea and collect seaweed for fertiliser.

Whilst making your way down over the ancient pathway – steeped in mystery and allure, the sound of the waves grows louder, and the air is filled with the sweet scent of gorse.

This prickly, yet resilient shrub has adapted to the island’s harsh maritime climate, thriving in the salty winds and poor soil. As you wander over the steps, the sweet, coconut-like scent of gorse wafts through the air, enticing you to explore further. In spring, the gorse is at its most breathtaking, when millions of tiny flowers burst into bloom, transforming the island into a dazzling yellow tapestry.

As the tide changes, the Rosaire Steps appear to shift and alter, revealing hidden pools and secret passageways. It is a mesmerising spectacle, and a testament to the unforgiving power of the ocean 😊

The steps lead down to a secluded cove, where crystal-clear waters lap against the shore and seagulls cry out overhead. At low tide, the steps reveal a beautiful rocky beach, perfect for exploration and discovery.

It is no wonder the Rosaire Steps remain a favourite spot, offering a glimpse into Herm’s dramatic and beautiful coastline.
