Abbie Smith interview for Virtual Bunch
Abbie Smith is a multidisciplinary Creative and Marketer from Guernsey. With extensive industry experience and qualifications in both design and marketing, she offers a wide range of services. She is Guernsey born but has a mixed European heritage.

In our interview with Abbie, we discussed the significance of branding, her favorite spots on the island, and what she loves most about her work.
What drew you to pursue a career that combines both design and marketing?

I have always been creative. Art & Design and English were always the subjects where I excelled at school. I started out doing a Graphic Design degree after school and then ventured into the Marketing world. Luckily enough, I’ve always managed to intertwine both Marketing and Design into my job roles since completing my degree in 2017. I have found that both skillsets have made me a bit of a ‘jack of all trades’ because I can not only design the look of a campaign but also implement it and launch the campaign, using my marketing skills.

How do you perceive the significance of branding in determining the success of a brand?

The branding of a company is essentially the personality. The look of the logo, marketing materials, tone of voice online and print materials, everything combined creates a brand personality and it is vital to get it right. Once you have the brand personality finalised, the marketing strategy is the next key to success.

How do you balance your professional responsibilities with your personal interests and passions outside of work?

I love to get outdoors. Whether it’s coastal rowing, running with my husband, or enjoying the beach.

What challenges do you commonly face when creating marketing materials, and how do you overcome them?

1. We always need to consider the bigger picture. Why are we creating this advert / what is the aim? Who are we targeting and what interests that target audience? What else is there taking place at the same time or competing with our advert?

2. There’s sometimes a difficult balance between taking on board a client’s wants and needs but also maintaining the quality of the work produced and keeping the brand messaging consistent and in line with the brand identity.

We are curious to know what aspects of your work do you find most fulfilling, and what keeps you motivated in your creative pursuits?

I love to be creative. I lose sense of time when I’m indulged in client work. Seeing the final artwork live and out in the public domain always gives me a sense of satisfaction.

How do you relax and where to you find inspiration for your work?

Fresh air is always the best way to relax for me! It always seems to put things in perspective if I’m facing a work or personal challenge or help when I’m suffering designer’s block!

What do you love most about living in Guernsey?

The short commutes and Guernsey summers. There’s nothing I love more than taking a melon down the beach and spending the afternoon in and out of the sea!

Imagine a first time visitor to the Channel Islands asks you for recommendation of what to do. What places or activities would you recommend?

There’s many things I could suggest but I think the best one would be to visit the Renior Cafe and do the Renoir walk! It’s stunning and the cafe serves delicious food and drink.
